Graduated in Finance, Cornell University, 2009
Currently an Investment Banking Analyst, Industrials
I joined Nomura in 2009 after graduating from Cornell University’s Applied Economics & Management program. I saw working with Nomura as an opportunity to join a rapidly growing firm with considerable momentum.
While having a background in finance prepared me well, Nomura further supported my development with a comprehensive six-week global training program in London. The program included the entire global first-year analyst class and served to bring everyone up to speed, regardless of academic background. It was also an incredible opportunity to meet my global peers and counterparts in Europe and Asia. We work with our colleagues abroad on a daily basis and it’s much easier to collaborate overseas when you have met and built relationships with the people you rely on everyday. The training program in London tightened my skill set, broadened by professional and personal network and provided me with a memorable life experience.
From the moment I returned from London, I was staffed on multiple active projects. Our lean deal teams allow junior bankers to take on significant responsibility, considerably impact the analysis and advice we provide our clients and take ownership of various aspects of our product. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and attend several client meetings which is typically rare at the analyst level across the street. My experience and exposure has sharpened my analytical ability, taught me how to value assets and has developed my ability to evaluate investments.
Day-to-day, my responsibilities include performing financial analysis and industry research, composing client presentations and working with my team to develop creative solutions for our Industrial clients. Senior bankers rely on me to conduct the valuation work as I’m typically closest to the numbers. Because our team is small but growing, I’ve developed excellent relationships with senior bankers that will benefit me throughout my career. The analyst role in investment banking has allowed me to develop the analytical and interpersonal skills crucial to being successful and is an ideal foundation for any career.
Nomura is ambitious. We’ve made tremendous progress in North America - we are attracting top-tier Wall Street talent and it feels like we’re gaining ground on our competitors. We want to be a leading global investment bank - and we are eager to win. While being driven and competitive is necessary to succeed at Nomura, we do have a lot of fun too. It’s a very collegial environment and I enjoy coming to work every day.
