Corporate citizenship

Nomura is actively involved in local communities in Asia, most notably where we do business, such as Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. The company focuses its regional volunteer and fundraising efforts towards educational and environmental initiatives, as well as programs focused on the elderly, through Nomura CARES (Community Affairs, Raising funds, and Employee Service), a grass-roots employee philanthropy committee.

In Hong Kong, Nomura CARES recently launched a unique partnership with HandsOn Hong Kong, a local NGO dedicated to community based volunteerism.  By partnering with local charities, HandsOn helps to recruit, train and manage volunteers and volunteer projects so that individuals and corporations can then give back to the community in a meaningful way.

In May 2012, Nomura was the presenting sponsor of the HandsOn Annual Gala, helping the organization with its most successful fund raising event ever.  Nomura has also partnered with HandsOn to refurbish a local elementary school on Lamma Island, as well as host young students to a day in the 2IFC office and a visit to local museums with the company’s Summer Analysts.

The company has also participated in a number of other philanthropic and CSR-related endeavors, including the following initiatives which we participate in on an annual basis:

  • Hong Kong Cleanup - presenting sponsor of the Hong Kong Cleanup for four years running, which has engaged over 60,000 participates and cleaned over 250,000kg of waste from Hong Kong’s beaches.  Each year the employees of Nomura take part in their own cleanup day at a local beach.
  • UNICEF Marathon – dozens of Nomura employees complete the run and raise funds that go to providing mother’s in under developed countries with HIV tests.
  • Box of Hope – employees fill gift boxes for children in Southeast Asia with fun and educational items which are given around year-end holidays.
  • Earth Hour – the company is active in reducing its carbon footprint and reducing its energy consumption.  Nomura participates in this global event organized by the World Wildlife Fund, joining tens of millions of concerned citizens and corporations throughout the world in calling for action to save our planet for future generations.

With over $500,000HK raised for various charities and strong support from regional management, Nomura CARES will continue to widen its footprint to have a greater impact in the communities where we do business.  The company always looks to create opportunities for a sustainable future, making sure that the decisions made today support the success of future generations.
