Joined Nomura University Degree Position
August 2006 University of Liverpool MBA (Business Finance) Analyst, Finance & Controllers

I am an analyst in the management information systems reporting team which provides Corporate Reporting services to local and global senior management. We assist the businesses by maintaining the integrity of the data, providing timely and accurate bespoke information on management results, providing enhanced commentary and analysis for strategy planning for the organisation and assisting the businesses and senior management in annual and half yearly capital allocation process.

One of the advantages of joining Nomura is that the size of my team makes it an ideal firm to learn everything about finance and gain recognition for your efforts. Right from the first day, I was exposed to real situations as opposed to the traditional training followed by work experience. This has helped me to get an overview of the nature of business Nomura is involved in and our positioning in the Japanese and European markets quicker than I would have expected. One year at Nomura has made me realise that all the knowledge that I gained from academics, financial magazines and books are incomplete without on the job experience. I can relate more with the market moves now and have a better understanding of the intricacies involved which definitely helps in analysing performance.

To be honest, when I joined Nomura, the thought of coping with learning and living up to the responsibilities associated with the role seemed quite daunting. Moreover, having lived in India all my life, my knowledge of work culture in the UK has been quite limited and I have always been wary of the so called "culture-shock". Nevertheless, working with my colleagues has been fun. They have never failed to go out of their way to provide the support necessary to cope with my responsibilities. Also, Nomura's investment in graduates ensures that we are regularly trained to develop the skills to keep abreast of the competition. The rotation programmes allows us to try our hands at different opportunities and decide where we want to be in the long run.

One area we have been orthodox in is the traditional investment banking "work hard, play hard" ethos. While everyone is trained to reach perfection within the given deadline, equal emphasis is given to "work-life" balance. On the social front, everyone has been friendly and our regular socials, including buddy lunches and networking lunches, are highlights of a typical working week. It has been a good experience working in a multicultural environment.

The learning curve for me has been a steep one ever since I've joined Nomura. The professional life is demanding due to the dynamic nature of the business. Considering the nature of business we are in, it is critical that we understand the nuances of financial reporting and management and the extraordinary team of people around me has kept me motivated all the time. On a personal front, I believe that apart from being in the heart of a competitive sector, I have also picked up a blend of skills that will serve to make me a hardened professional when I step up to the next level.
