October 2005 Nottingham Trent BA (Hons) English Sales Trader, Global Markets

Melissa’s first experience with Nomura was at the tender age of 16 when she did two weeks’ work experience. This was followed by various work placements and a seven month stint at Nomura after graduating in 2002. She then went on to work for two large European investment banks before returning to Nomura in October 2005.

"I remember thinking when I first came here on work experience what a great atmosphere and buzz there was and I really enjoyed it. Having worked at several other banks, I knew Nomura was the only real choice for me. I was offered six different positions with other banks but just felt Nomura suited my personality best. They don’t try and pigeonhole you or get you to stay in one job like some places. For example, I joined client services, but I’ve since moved to the Japanese equity sales trading desk. I’m also hoping to go to Tokyo soon and meet some of the traders in person.

Working on the trading desk, you have to be a people person and work well under pressure. We have 70 – 80 European clients so it’s important to be able to adapt to different situations and not be easily fazed.

I’m usually in the office early just as the Japanese market closes. On my way to work I’ll read any emails or news updates on my BlackBerry. By 7.30am I’ll have written and sent a summary of comments from around the world to our European clients so they know what’s been happening overnight. The day may also involve meeting a client for lunch which is a great way to get to know them and their business better. In the afternoon, I’ll fulfil the orders for that evening and start the end of day admin procedures. I normally finish around 5.30pm.

To begin with, I shadowed colleagues until I built up confidence to do things on my own. I also had lots of on-the job training. My tip for anyone thinking of joining Nomura is to get some work experience as an intern and see if it’s right for you. And once you are here, make an impression and don’t be afraid to ask questions."
