I have been working as a technology analyst at Nomura since June 07. My group sits within the infrastructure division which is responsible for supporting Nomura's various business functions - the technology team look after technological requirements for each business. This ranges from developing systems inhouse and implementing 3rd party applications to supporting these systems to make sure that everything is in working order. At the moment I am based in our London office working with the equities technology team to support traders and sales people who are involved in our equities business. I am part of the equities QA team. We are a team of three responsible for testing all the applications that are rolled out to equities users. There are a variety of systems that I work with. I test the sales order management systems that the various teams use, the trading system and some of the booking systems as well. When I started, I solely concentrated on testing. Since then I have worked on a number of interesting projects as well as a lot of ad-hoc tasks, as and when my manager needs me to help out with something. Nomura has started a new CRM (Client Relationship Management) initiative where we are looking to implement a new company-wide CRM system. We have outsourced the software but we are customising it to suit our needs before we roll it out to users. As part of this I am working on the requirements analysis and design elements for our IBD (investment banking division) business. This is a good example of how flexible our role is. You're not restricted to working on projects that only fall within your area. If you show interest in working in a project which is outside your business function, your manager will try as much as possible to accommodate your ambitions. We can also request to rotate to other teams if we want to try something new. Nomura invests a lot in your career development. At the beginning of the year, you sit with your manager and set out personal objectives for the next 12 months. This can include anything from skills that you would like to develop to projects you would like to work on. Much of your career development is left in your hands - you can book yourself into a variety of courses and there are a number of online training modules that you can access for free. There are regular (mid-year and year-end) reviews with your manager to track progress on your objectives and help you with any issues. For example, on my manager's suggestion I have started learning Japanese. It is a one to one session where the teacher comes into our offices and I can take time out from my daily work to do these sessions. Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed working in Nomura for the last 14 months. The people I work with are always very friendly and helpful. I interact with my team members not only professionally but also socially. I would highly recommend Nomura to anyone who is looking to work within the finance industry. This is a place where you can leave your mark and be noticed, even if you are new graduate! Click here for more information on learning and development .
