September 2006 London School of Economics Masters in Accounting and Finance Corporate Finance

"I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada by my parents who immigrated from India and who instilled in me a passion for travelling and learning about different cultures. After high school, I continued my studies at McMaster University where I enrolled in the commerce program. McMaster gave me the opportunity to realize my aspirations of venturing overseas in my junior year through a one-year exchange program at UMIST in Manchester, England. This experience was my first taste of life abroad and of Britain. I enjoyed getting out of my comfort zone and experiencing all that Britain had to offer.

In 2003, I completed my bachelors degree and began my career. After a couple of years in Toronto's financial district I decided that a change in careers was necessary, as I no longer felt challenged within my current role. I was accepted to the London School of Economics in the summer of 2005 and began the Masters in Accounting and Finance program the following September.

I began my professional career at Nomura in corporate finance in October 2006. I spent my first six months as part of the general M&A team gaining exposure to the wide variety of deals and sectors. My current position is in the automotive team where I am hoping to benefit from the vast knowledge and expertise of my colleagues and senior staff members.

The reason I joined Nomura was that I wanted a career that would utilize my extensive accounting background. More importantly, I wanted to work in an exciting, fast paced environment, where I would be continually challenged, have responsibility earlier on in my career and have the opportunity to work within a team.

The investment banking industry is a highly competitive and challenging environment that is extremely fast paced and continuously evolving. One of the biggest challenges I face as an analyst is becoming an "expert" in a specific market, sector or company in a very short period of time. Versatility has become my most important attribute, as it is essential for success in the fast paced world of banking and finance.

I believe it is important to manage a work life balance and Nomura encourages this. In terms of hobbies, my main passion is travelling. I actually recently returned from Nomura's Graduate Training Program where I spent two weeks in Japan, which was an amazing opportunity to learn more about Japanese culture. I had the opportunity to visit a number of temples, try a variety of Japanese dishes and take part in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Aside from travelling, I try to remain active through running, cycle and playing football.

My hobbies keep life balanced but it is also important to have goals as they keep you motivated and challenged. In terms of goals, In five years time, I see myself working in a role that involves a great deal of client interaction and the opportunity to travel around the world. This goal satisfies me on both a career and personal level."
