David wanted a career that made use of his logical thinking and natural problem solving abilities. So he started off doing a Computer Science degree at University of Surrey, and then enrolled on a Masters at University College to study machine learning and evolutionary computation. Keen to get into financial IT specifically, he joined Nomura in 2004.

“I first gained exposure to financial IT during my placement year at uni when I worked for a leading fund manager, Fidelity Investments. I then did my Masters and studied techniques to build artificial intelligent systems – and this confirmed to me that a career in financial IT was the way to go.

As part of Nomura’s equity technology team, I’m there to help traders and salespeople across the globe use various software applications. I also get to work on small projects developing new applications – which is something I find very rewarding, designing a creative solution to a problem and seeing it being used.

No day is the same here – and I really like that about it. One day, for instance, we might be under pressure if we’re confronted with a liquid marketplace, with large volumes being traded. We’re at the front line – we’ve got to make sure the technology is meeting the traders’ needs – and that can give you a real adrenaline rush. Another day, we might be meeting with IT management to discuss the introduction of new technology to route orders around the world more effectively. There’s always something new going on.

That variety means I’m always learning too. When I joined, I thought I could learn it all in two weeks, but I’m amazed at the technical intricacies in equities.  You’re always learning more as new applications are introduced.

If I had to describe the culture, I’d say working in the front office in London has a very European feel. There are people here from a wide range of cultures and ethnic backgrounds. It’s a friendly yet professional environment, and everyone shares a common interest to thrive and get the top results!

To do well here, you need a passion for excellence and integrity, and a ‘get the job done’ kind of attitude. There’s a strong emphasis on innovation and teamwork too. If you’ve got those skills, you’ll be able to cope with the steep learning curve. As for equity technology specifically, if you enjoy IT with a flavour of finance, you should consider it – particularly if you like the buzz of having to juggle lots of tasks, and you want to be at the forefront of new technologies.
