What is it?
Nomura's dynamic finance and controllers division supports and controls the needs of the business through accounting, treasury, tax and regulatory services. As well as managing the flow of money in and out of the business, the internal control systems provide an excellent overview of Nomura Europe's performance including its balance sheet, revenues, expenses and regulatory capital.
The division is made up of the following areas:
Finance Product Control
You'll be involved in preparing and analysing trading profit and loss and Nomura's balance sheet for our worldwide trading activities. You'll quickly learn about Nomura's trading strategies and the components our products to ensure correct valuations. You will also be contribute to firm-wide management reporting, as well as business analysis for the front office and the European executive committee. You will be closely involved with the trading desks on a daily basis and work alongside other areas of Nomura including risk management, compliance and operations.
Structured and Exotic Middle Office (SEMO)
The primary responsibility for this area is to perform a three way reconciliation between the bank's termsheet, pricing supplement / confirmation and the trade booking for structured trades. It also seeks to generate efficiencies and to create scalability around the front office booking process.
Risks and Controls
You will get to the heart of finding better ways to manage the day-to-day needs of the business by identifying better processes and controls that fit with our strategic objectives. The department aims to encourage a 'control culture' across the whole business (primarily through Sarbanes-Oxley, the rules and regulations governing corporate reporting).
Management Information Systems (MIS)
This area is responsible for providing an accurate overview of Nomura Europe's performance in relation to revenues, expenses, regulatory capital and employee headcount. Your work will contribute to critical management information that is presented regularly to Nomura European executive committee, offering an insight into Nomura's strategic direction.
Corporate Reporting
Key you will be involved in preparing, reconciling and analysing financial statements for our European operations. This includes balance sheet and income statements for local and group reporting in accordance with local Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and U.S. GAAP.
Regulatory Reporting
This area is responsible for daily monitoring of the capital adequacy of regulated Nomura entities as required by the FSA. This is a vital area of the business as the FSA requires credit institutions, such as Nomura, to have enough capital resources set aside to meet the implied regulatory risk Nomura is committed to.
Accounting Policy Group
You will work with the team to assist finance and controllers in identifying, understanding and resolving technical accounting queries under U.S. GAAP and local GAAP. You will help provide technical and advisory support to key European projects such as the implementation of new accounting standards and partnering the business in structuring transactions. This area is also responsible for the development and distribution of concise US GAAP accounting policy documentation.
New Products
This group is responsible for ensuring Nomura is able to trade new products, to execute complex structured transactions and to commence new businesses in a controlled environment. This function ensures that support areas are able to conduct appropriate due-diligence so any potential risk is minimised.
Global Treasury
You will be part of a team tasked with maximising Nomura's liquidity at the lowest possible cost, while helping and incentivising business lines to generate the maximum risk-adjusted return. Treasury's aim is to provide a fair, transparent, and impartial high quality service to maximise shareholder's value and be a trusted financial advisor to our internal clients.
What we're looking for
We're looking for bright, outgoing, self-motivated students to join our team. You will need:
an analytical mind
high numeracy
strong analytical / problem solving skills
good interpersonal and communication skills
an Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) or equivalent undergraduate degree minimum for graduates
one year to completion of an undergraduate degree (2:1 or equivalent) for placement students
What you can expect as a placement student
You will join one of the business units within finance which gives you a good understanding of the specific business unit and how the finance division operates as a whole. You will receive all the dedicated training and support you need to maximise your professional and personal development and contribute to your future career direction.
You will perform a line role with increasing responsibilities as you progress through the one-year programme. Through on-the-job training you will learn about Nomura's products and systems, while acquiring key skills and a sound knowledge of our operations.
To help speed up your development you will be assigned a buddy. Your buddy will be an experienced member of the finance team within which you will be working – they will be available to provide general advice on working life and impart Nomura's values and culture.

What you can expect as a graduate
You will join our rotation scheme that exposes you to different areas of the business. This gives you a very good understanding of how the finance division works and enables you to interact with colleagues across different business units. You will receive all the dedicated training and support you need to develop your career and professional skills including all your necessary CIMA, ACCA and CFA professional qualifications.
You will perform a line role with increasing responsibilities as you progress through the two-year programme. Through both classroom and on-the-job training you will learn about the firm's products and systems, while acquiring key skills and a sound knowledge of the company's operations.
All graduates are expected to complete at least one rotation across different business units during their two-year training period. It enables you to form a greater understanding of the finance function and contributes to your personal development and future career direction.
To help speed up your development you will be assigned a buddy and a mentor. Your buddy will be an experienced member of the finance team within which you will be working – they will be available to provide general advice on working life, studying and impart Nomura's values and culture. Your mentor will be a vice president within the firm who is either a qualified accountant or someone with several years' experience in the industry. Your mentor will meet with you to discuss, on a confidential basis, career progression, training, and any work related issues.
