Joined Nomura April 2006
Position Associate, Corporate Finance Group, Investment Banking

After achieving an Honours degree in Engineering and a Finance degree at the University of Western Australia, Tristan decided to leave Sydney where he worked for a Corporate Finance boutique. His travels took him to France and in particular to Insead, one of the world’s leading graduate business schools in Fontainebleau near Paris.

“Having spent a great year doing the MBA in France, I was looking for the opportunity to join a company with a growing Corporate Finance House. I already had four years’ experience so it was important for me to be somewhere where I could broaden my experience and refine my skills. This meant having access to senior people that I could learn from within a dynamic organisation.

When the opportunity to join Nomura came along I took it. The Corporate Finance Group here has doubled in size in the last two years and is set to continue on a similar trajectory. Growth that fast comes from having a real entrepreneurial culture and that was another strong attraction for me. There’s also huge diversity here – of nationalities, backgrounds, educations and skills and it’s a wonderful place to learn from others.

I work on a wide range of different projects that can include everything from deal origination to valuation and merger models to strategic analysis and developing rationales behind mergers and acquisitions. Much of my time is spent working with and talking to different deal teams inside and outside Nomura. Internally, these include the Equity Capital Markets team, plus the legal, credit and compliance departments, and externally lawyers, accountants and our clients.

You need to have good interpersonal skills, especially as many of the people I work with are senior management or above. Access to this echelon provides a really good insight into many companies’ strategic thinking and it’s also a good opportunity to broaden your knowledge in lots of areas. So far, I’ve worked across the IT, mobile phones, real estate, resources, healthcare and beverages areas. At the moment I’m deeply involved in the industrials sector.

As part of a project I was working on recently, I found myself flying over the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan with some great clients in an old Soviet-era helicopter. We landed in the foothills of the Himalayas at 4200m. It was a pretty bumpy ride, but unforgettable.

There are plenty of courses and seminars on offer here too and since I joined Nomura I’ve been refining my personal and professional skills while learning about the way Nomura likes to do things. In the future, I’m aiming to become part of the senior banking team with a focus on origination and getting new clients in the door, or possibly having a senior finance role in a dynamic growth company.

The Insead MBA has been a great way to equip me with the tools I need to develop my career and Nomura has proved an excellent environment in which to broaden my knowledge and refine my skills.”
