Team

Denise Pollard-KnightDenise has been responsible for leading the Team's investment activities since joining in 1999 and has over 11 years experience as a venture capitalist. Prior to this she was an investment manager in the Bioscience Unit of Rothschild Asset Management, a group managing over $500 million in private and public biotechnology companies.

Denise has held senior management positions in R&D and in strategic consulting. Denise holds a PhD and BSc (Hons) from Birmingham University and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. She is also actively involved in US and European investments most recently Proteolix and OncoMed. She is currently a Director of Albireo, Cerimon, Idenix, Nabriva, and OncoMed and was previously a Director on the board of Viacell and DeveloGen and an observer on the board of Ark. Denise is a member of the Board of Trustees and Council of the British Heart Foundation and holds a Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors. Denise is a Director of Nomura Phase4 Ventures Ltd and a member of the Investment Committee.

Charles SermonCharles joined Nomura's Transaction Legal team in 1998 and the Team in 2000. He has nine years healthcare private equity experience. Before joining Nomura Charles practised as a corporate lawyer with Freshfields in London for four years where he gained experience in structuring and executing transactions including fund raisings and M&A for public and private companies in a range of sectors including healthcare.

Within the Team Charles focuses primarily on structuring new investments for Phase4 Ventures and in particular was involved with all three spin outs completed by the Team in the last three years from Sandoz/Novartis, J&J/Alza and AstraZeneca. He is also involved with managing the sale of stock in public portfolio companies. He holds an LLB (Hons) from Hull University, the Law Society Final Examination from Chester College of Law and a Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors. Charles is a member of the Investment Committee.

Naveed Siddiqi

Naveed joined the Healthcare Corporate Finance Group at Nomura in 1998 and has focused on the Team's investment activities since 1999. Prior to joining the Team he gained several years experience advising management teams and companies on buy-outs, cross border M&A, private and public company offerings in biotechnology and other sectors whilst at Nomura and EFG Group.

He has nine years experience as an investment professional with Phase4 Ventures and has been involved in numerous investments including Pharmion, Altus and Phenomix. Naveed holds a degree in Medicine from Guy's Hospital, London and worked in the UK's National Health Service as a doctor. He qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG and holds a Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors. Naveed is a member of the Investment Committee.

Jonathan Jones

Jonathan joined the Team in 2003. Prior to this he spent two years working as a consultant at ZS Associates. During his time at ZS he worked exclusively with European and US biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies helping develop and execute a variety of strategic and sales and marketing initiatives including portfolio review and prioritisation, brand development and sales force effectiveness.

Jonathan has been involved in the Team's initial investments in ARYx, Acadia, Chroma, Nabriva and Phenomix. Jonathan holds an MA in Chemistry and a DPhil in Inorganic Chemistry both from the University of Oxford. Jonathan is an observer on the boards of Chroma and Nabriva.

John Westwater

John joined Phase4 Ventures in 2004. Prior to this he spent over four years at Morgan Stanley within their Healthcare Investment Banking Group and Mergers, Acquisitions and Restructuring Department (MARD). During this time, John advised a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies including Elan on its successful recovery and restructuring plan that resulted in asset divestment proceeds of more than $2 billion.

John was also heavily involved in several capital market offerings including Elan’s concurrent convertible bond and equity offering in 2003 and Epigenomics’ IPO in 2004. Since joining Phase4 Ventures, John has been involved with investments in Cerimon, Zosano and Paratek. John holds a PhD and a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from Heriot-Watt University. John is also involved with managing the sale of stock in public portfolio companies.

Alastair MacKinnonAlastair joined Phase4 Ventures in 2005. Prior to this he gained nine years experience as a medical doctor in the National Health Service. Much of this was in cardiovascular surgery, oncology surgery and intensive care based in London hospitals.

He completed the Diploma in Corporate Finance at the London Business School in 2002. Alastair has been involved in investments in Chroma, Phenomix, Albireo, Proteolix and OncoMed. Alastair holds a Physiology BSc (Hons) and MBBS from Kings College London and is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (Ed).

Emma JohnsenEmma joined Phase4 Ventures in 2006. Previously, Emma worked for three years in the biotechnology sector in the US, facilitating cross border licensing opportunities at Summit Pharmaceuticals.

Emma holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Essex University and a DPhil in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Oxford. Emma speaks fluent Japanese. Emma has been responsible for organising external events for the Team including the annual portfolio retreat. Emma also assists the Team with the website, press releases and conference planning and sponsorship.

John Richard

John is based in Atlanta, Georgia USA. He has been an advisor to the Team for eight years and is Senior Business Advisor to GPC Biotech AG. He was previously at Sequus where he was responsible for negotiating the acquisition of the company by Alza (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) and he was the CEO and co-founder of Impath Inc., now part of Genzyme.

John assists with strategic and commercial diligence activities and has represented Phase4 Ventures on the board of Altus, Targacept and Immgenics (acquired by Abgenix). John is also a partner with Georgia Venture Partners, a seed stage venture company. He currently represents Phase4 Ventures on the board of Zosano Pharma. John received his MBA from Harvard and his BS from Stanford. John is a member of the Investment Committee.

Jennifer Hamilton Jennifer is based in Canada. She has worked with the Team as an advisor for six years and assists with deal sourcing in North America and with monitoring Phase4 Ventures' public company portfolio. Jennifer is a biotechnology industry consultant and is based in Vancouver.

She has a PhD in Experimental Pathology from University of British Columbia (lipid metabolism). Following her Postdoctoral fellowship, Jennifer spent six years with the London-based Rothschild Bioscience Unit, a group managing over $500 million in private and public biotechnology stocks.
