About the Global Media Field Trip

New York: Monday 21 _ Wednesday 23 May 2012

The Nomura Global Media team is pleased to announce its annual European Media Field Trip to New York. The trip will focus on the US operations of the major European media companies, meeting with operational management, and where possible, their customers, competitors, and other industry experts

Participants include Activision, Aegis, Advertising Panel – Beekman Associates,  American Association of Publishers, Belltower Books, Interpublic, Kno.com, Omnicom, Publicis, Thomson Reuters, Reed Elsevier , Rockefeller, Wolters Kluwer and WPP

Instead of the usual “last results presentation” we aim to differentiate the conference through focusing on specific company divisions that are driving growth with divisional management presenting; we also have a great line up of industry speakers, please see the presenting companies and agenda tab for details. This year we are focusing on 3 key themes i) Advertising, ii) Legal, iii) Publishing – particularly the move to digital.

David Moore, Chairman and CEO of 24/7 Real Media, will be explaining the function of 24/7 in offering ad serving, tracking, targeting and analytics and explaining WPP’s approach to proprietary technology vs the open standards approach of other agencies. VML, headed by Jon Cook, is one of WPP’s award winning digital agencies and was rated by Forrester as one of the industry’s 7 digital leaders along with OgilvyInteractive and Wunderman. Nigel Morris, Head of North America, presents for the third year. The US continues to drive strong momentum within Aegis – highlighted by the recent GM account win. Bob Lord is CEO of Razorfish, one of the world’s largest and most successful full service digital agencies, also named as a digital leader by Forrester. It was founded in 1995 and was owned by Microsoft from 2007 as part of Aquantive before being acquired by Publicis in 2009 for US$530m in cash and stock. Razorfish is one of several large digital businesses acquired by Publicis including Digitas, Performics and Rosetta. Razorfish has over 2400 people globally, with 1800 in the US and 600 internationally. This year Wolters focus on their Legal division which contributes c. 40% of EBITDA. FY11 results saw negative growth in legal but despite this, legal margins increased by 30bps to 22.4% reflecting cost savings and higher margin electronic sales. We expect investors to focus on the future of the transition from print to digital as well as increasing subscription revenues

Mike Suchsland – President of Legal
Mike Suchsland is one of the key members of the Executive Team under Jim Smith at Thomson Reuters and runs one of its 4 most important business units. Legal accounts for c.27% of group revenue and c.33% of operating profit and is one of the company’s highest margin divisions with a margin of over 27%. Covering large law firms (mainly through Westlaw), corporate and government, risk and compliance the legal business has both US and international (18%) exposure. In FY11 the legal business grew 3% organically and 8% overall with 13% growth internationally. This is a chance to understand the development in the legal market as well as Thomson’s views on the changing competitive dynamics with Bloomberg increasing its exposure to the legal environment

 Henry Cohn - Academic group challenging the price of journals

Henry Cohn is a principal researcher (and one of three founding members) at Microsoft Research New England in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Previously he was head of the cryptography group at Microsoft Research in Redmond, Washington, and before that, he was a senior researcher in the theory group. He is also an adjunct professor in the MIT Department of Mathematics.

 Henry is one of a group of mathematicians and scientists who have signed up to the boycott of Reed Elsevier journals and will discuss the reasons for the boycott and potential changes to the science journal industry at our conference. Potential structural change in the journal industry is a topic subject and very much of interest for Reed shareholders and those of other journal publishers. Dave Krysiak, the CEO of Belltower Books will be presenting on the second hand market in College books. Belltower books was founded in 2004 by two Cornell University under grads (DK being one of them), and offers students a simple way to sell on their old college text books for cash. Belltower then re-sells the second hand textbooks. We expect to learn about current student behaviour, attitudes to ebooks, rental, and digital, from someone right at the coalface of the college book market
